Sandstone has excellent but limited accommodation on site for our visitors. Accommodation in the surrounding areas has changed over the last few years so we have drawn up a current list of establishments available in the Ficksburg, Fouriesburg and Clarens area that our visitors may wish to use. Please note that publication of the establishments listed does not imply any endorsement of the establishments by Sandstone Estates.

After a period of consolidation at Sandstone during which we have upgraded our security system and introduced full solar powered electricity to the farm we ready to welcome visitors to our first major event for 2024. The Cherry Festival at Sandstone will feature unlimited train rides for all visitors and our smaller rail system, Seb’s Railway will be operational and running through our Game. Changes to the fencing of the Game Camp will ensure that visitors will get views of the various game within the camp. We will also be launching some new coaches for this railway to enhance the experience. We have refurbished two of our smaller coaches with new braking systems for greater passenger safety and in line with the Game Camp location, one coach has been decorated with the Springbok emblem. Where else can you experience game viewing from the slow passage of a steam hauled train?

In March of this year, after a number of security issues and a serious drought situation at Sandstone, we restricted visitors to Sandstone to Saturdays only. We have now resolved the issues and the drought is behind us so we have now revised our visiting arrangements.

As part of their African Collage journey, which is over 3700km by rail, and extends over 12 days winding its way from Pretoria to Cape Town, a group of 48 Rovos Rail guests visited Sandstone last week for a Walking Tour of the Heritage Collection and a steam train ride to Grootdraai. The 1958 built Class NGG16 Garratt locomotive, number 153, hauled the special train which was made up as a mixed train of goods wagons and passenger coaches much to the delight of the guests.
