Funkey 1313.1/1976 6WDH 18 ton Umfolozi number 24-1 "Nhlathu"
Hunslet Taylor 8188/1977 6WDH SD110 Umfolozi number 24-07 "Mamba"
Updated - 15th May 2006 The Pongola Sugar Estate had a tramway system that survived until 1984, being closed after the devastation of Cyclone Demoina. Many of its locos were sold to Umfolozi Cooperative Sugar Planters at Mtubatuba, including these two units which were bought subsequently by Alfred County Railway (ACR). When Sandstone acquired the three Bagnall diesels from ACR, they also acquired the two 2’6” gauge units. They are currently both at the Bloemfontein facility of Sandstone awaiting a decision as to their future, either to be regauged to 2ft and restored, or sold as is to a 2’6” gauge operator. Both are in poor condition as a result of standing in the corrosive sea air at Port Shepstone.
"Nhlathu" and "Mamba" ready for transport to Sandstone, at Port Shepstone.
