When the owners of Sandstone Estates purchased the farm, part of the
national rail network crossed the land. Sandstone saw this as an opportunity
to distribute farm produce via this traditional and cost effective
method. Since then, the narrow gauge track has been laid, both as
a tourist feature and a viable link to the national rail infrastructure.
The
Sandstone Heritage Trust has been able to rescue a number of abandoned
and decaying locomotives and wagons and a dedicated team is painstakingly
restoring them to their former glory. Not only does this secure
a valuable part of southern Africa's industrial heritage, but it
creates valuable jobs as well as passing on priceless skills from
one generation to the next.
