Desmond Clarke has sent these photographs of the current wheat development. What is interesting is the analysis of the root penetration in soil that has been worked to different levels. It is a clear indication that our soils are of the type that need deep working every few years and if possible on a by-directional basis, i.e. twice in each direction so that root penetration is assured. Of course the ultimate yields will tell their own story but our experimentation is clearly indicating that our soils require handling in a very special way. There is no doubt that Minimum Till brings huge advantages but with some provisos in terms of dealing with compaction that seems to develop regardless of how little we actually impact on the soil mechanically.
