LAWLEY LEGACY

Sandstone Heritage Trust - A very special gathering of steam and railway enthusiasts was held on 28th / 29th June 2008.  The occasion was the launch of our latest restoration project, namely the Falcon locomotive "Lawley", No. NG97.  This significant 2-ft Narrow Gauge locomotive will join its sister locomotive, Lawley No. NG106, at Sandstone Estates to be introduced to enthusiasts from around the world.

Subject: RE: LAWLEY WEEKEND

Thank you, and the entire Sandstone team – it was really great to get to visit Sandstone again. Seeing the transformation of both of the Lawley’s from some 20 – 25 years back, as static displays, at the museum and in Roodepoort.  Yes, seeing them in the condition that they are today, and fully operational – Most rewarding, thanks. Also both operational at once – some milestone!

I do wish SIA the very best!  And I do know that with support all the goals will be achieved.

I would like to thank you and the entire Sandstone team for a great, memorable week end

Best regard,
Charles.

Just to say having seen the recent pictures of Lawley No 97 in action at Sandstone, my congratulations to everyone who was involved in it's rebuild and restoration to running order. Once again, the pictures show that it is another outstanding piece of work by the Bloemfontein shops and a credit to all involved.

Lawley NG97

Sandstone’s good friend, David Joy, the Editor at Narrow Gauge World, has run a spectacular photo spread on the June 2008 launch of Lawley NG97 and its doubleheading with Sandstone’s original Lawley, BR7.

Lawley Drawings
Although two Lawley 4-4-0 locomotives have been rebuilt by Sandstone, we have always had great difficulty in accessing the correct drawings. Recently Leith Paxton has unearthed this boiler arrangement drawing, marked Zebediela Estates, where both BR7 and NG97 spent a great deal of their working lives...
