Classic Car group discovers the Sandstone Heritage Trust.
ADDED 6th October 2008

We were reflecting the other day on how the preservation movement goes through different phases of concentrated interest.  For some years our 2-ft Narrow Gauge railway has preoccupied people's minds but of late we have seen a dramatic rise in interest in classic military machinery and the classic car enthusiasts are also showing huge amounts of interest in our establishment.  The MG Car Club, the Jaguar Club, amongst others have recently visited.

Hester has submitted a report on yet another classic car group - this time collectors of Italian cars.

DRAKENSBERG GIRO 2008
5 SEPTEMBER 2008

The Drakensberg Giro started their weekend from leaving the Engen One Stop at Grasmere in Gauteng. From here they went to "Die Ou Handelhuis en Koffee Stoep" in Rosendal for lunch

The team left for Sandstone Estates and arrived at 14h30 where the Fowler locomotive were standing, steaming at Hoekfontein Station. The guests got onto the steam loco for a train ride to Grootdraai. Guests were astonished to see the green wheat lands all the way down the railway land as far as you could see. Some came and asked what the “green” stuff is that were planted?

After the train ride we walked down to the vintage shed and steam workshop for a tour of the facility. The tractors & old cars on display brought back many memories and were discussed in detail.

Everyone one had a good fun time at Sandstone Estates and wanted to return as soon as possible.  The teams left for Farm "Wynford" were they are staying the night to continue their tour early the morning.

Hi Mike,

My apologies for such a slow response, and the fact that it has taken me three weeks to say "thank you" for such a wonderful visit to the Estate.

We all loved it!

The group was a collection of Italian car enthusiasts. The Italian Connection is organised each year either by myself or Ian Huntly from the FIAT Club. This year was my turn, and so the Italian Connection Drakensberg Giro was under the auspices of the Lancia Club South Africa.

I am not sure what further info you would like, but I have included a brief report that was put in the Lancia Newsletter [click here or on the thumbnail opposite to view the Newsletter - 420Kb PDF - opens in a new window].

When I have time I intend doing a much fuller report and sending something to two of the motoring publications.

Kind regards
Nick
