WN43 - A cracker of a day - By Kerry Young - 10th May 2007

10th May 2007

It certainly was a good day. The weather was uncommonly warm and we made good progress on a number of fronts. ( and sides too for that matter.)
The change of sun angles gave light to the inner firebox of 'F13' and I just couldn't resist snapping the view......................

01

That equals a lot of work to do yet!

02

In the morning, most of the workshop staff lent a hand in getting the sanding done and spot priming with undercoat on the rail car. Jolly Roger was jolly cross, as it has been blocking the line long enough. All hands to the pump and a lot was done in a short time, even though it wasn't finished.

03

We removed the gate frame as seen here. A good opportunuity for the crane operator to get the shot as we moved along.

04

We placed it in position prior to the post holes being dug. Keith Brown tried the swing of the gate and got his picture taken as a result.

05

Seen it before? Not quite. This was today. The MG set was wired in and running and since it was alive, we had to go for a run, right? Excellent excuse. Looks good out there with the tide in. Note the disappointing pixelization around the pantograph and wires. That comes with compressed JPEG pictures.

06

While we are here, I noticed car 11 and the Kitson steam tram were out. Did I ever tell you that the Kitson is the only known serviceable one of the breed known to exist anywhere?

07

Back to 'Ec7 'and the MG set was humming away nicely. We still have to rotate the brush set on the generator end to lift the voltage, hence the meters and open terminal covers.

08

On the opposite side of the floor................

..............is one of the two compressor sets,. The other is at the other end on the same side.

09

A cab view of the road leading home.

10

Gentleman Joe (Pickering) was the driver today. Not rostered on the City tramway, he allows a big smile to light the face as he too sees that we have got the MG problem out of the way.

11

The Maori Pa is virtually complete and they have had trial runs with their entertainment programme.

12

Back home and back to earth. Evidence of previous problems come to light on the railcar bodywork.

13

A bit rough on the sides? A bit more bog will soon fix that!

14

A tailpiece for the day. The Flying Scotsman has given us an upgrade of our computer. Ian works hard to keep us in line and on line. Thanks to him, we have an ever improving computer set up and much work done on the railcar as well. Thanks indeed Ian
Mention of thanks, I took a picture of the track work at the carriage sheds, or so I thought. I guess I did something wrong, as it's not here. They have laid and part ballasted road two now and I can tell you, unlike today, a lot of their work was done in very inclement weather. Thanks again to Peter Jenkinson and his team!
Mention of whom; I had an e-mail from him not long ago to say he'd lost his Mother. She had passed away after doing much better than had been predicted. My sympathies indeed Peter and I'm sure that is echoed by all who know you!!

That's it for this week my friends, cheers, 'K'.
