As with many other industrial railways in Africa, Sena sugar realised the value of diesel traction as an alternative to steam. The Luabo Estate on the north bank of the Zambesi appears to have gone this route first with the delivery of a number of Baguley Drewry 0-6-0DM units from 1959 onwards. At Marromeu on the southern side a further seven 0-6-0 DM diesels from the same manufacturer were delivered in 1976.

When Sena re-opened in 1999-2000 many of these were still in existence at both locations. After Sandstone's visit a number of these were acquired and shipped to South Africa. Only the locos at Marromeu were able to be moved and made the river passage on sugar barges to Beira from where they were shipped to Durban. Two units were moved by road from Beira to Sandstone. Of the original seven, Sandstone has acquired five with the other two (D9 & D12) having gone to the USA.
All are in extremely poor condition but the possibility of restoring a number of them is planned for the future.
