Hallo Joanna,
Congratulations with the publication of THE SANDSTONE RAILROAD.
The work done by Lucas Nel and others as well as the input by Mr Mole
is astonishing, even to us who kept in touch through the years.
Hundreds of the passengers of BUSHVELD TRAIN SAFARIS spent many wonderful
hours at the farm with last years Cosmos Festival one of the highlights.
I have attached a report from a BLIND passenger (Quinten
Pendle - read the letter here) on last year’s Cosmos Safari
while Vernon Buxton, in the travel business, also related his experiences.
Regards
JNC (Boon) Boonzaaier.

Dear Joanna
May I please be permitted to thank both you and Dave Richardson for
the super book about the Sandstone Steam Railway's first ten years.
It is wonderful that the trust has been able to do such a wonderful
job saving so much of South Africa's Standard and Narrow Gauge Railway's
stock, and in such a short space of time. Here in the UK it would
have taken twice that time I am sure.
My interests lie in Railway Modelling in OO9 and I have several models
of Southern African locomotives, an NG15, three NG/G16s, and a Class
91, from The SAR, a PPC Funkey Diesel, (now in North Wales) and a
Natal Sugar Bagnall Mayer. These models all run on a small layout
which has its basis on Avontuur.
On your railway there is a South African Hunslet Taylor diesel locomotive,
your No 3, which I would like to model. Are there any scale drawings
of this locomotive available please?
Yours sincerly
Ian Turner

Hi all,
I have just received my copy of the Sandstone Heritage Trust book.
This details all rolling stock acquisitions and restorations in the
last 10 years. It is a very well planned, neat and concise guide to
the miracle that has happened in the Eastern Free State in this time
period.
Very good value at R145,00. I am not sure how many are available now
but there will be further printings I believe.
Regards,
Chris

Dear Joanne, Wilfred and the team,
I simply want to thank you for the copy of THE book, which arrived
a couple of days ago. I don't know what I was expecting, but it wasn't
the truly high quality, excellent volume that arrived in the post.
I want to congratulate all concerned on a fantastic product - I work
with books and publishing, and was most impressed by the quality of
every aspect of the production. And I am most grateful for the complimentary
copy, but also for the opportunity to have been a part of it. The
reproduction of my drawings is excellent.
Hopefully, one day I will get to actually visit Sandstone.
Thank you again,
Sue Lawrence

Hi
All,
Firstly, let me say thank you for my copy of this wonderful book that
I received this week!
Secondly, let me congratulate you on such an excellent production!
It is a great reference work, and obviously of huge interest to all
rail and steam fans.
I am particularly fascinated with the photo of NG/G 16 # 153 at Jolivet
in 1982 (on page 54).
Who took this photo?
Is it at all possible to get a hi-res digital copy?
Jolivet station bordered on the farm ‘Cranbrooke’, where
I grew up! As a kid, this was the station where we went every day
to collect our mailbag from the train. No wonder as far as I am concerned
“railways” are narrow-gauge!
When some know-it-all tells you that my photo of #88 (on page 51)
is not taken at ‘Etosha’, please tell them that you just
slipped this in to test if they are awake. It was actually taken at
Paddock circa 1980 (still SATS era).
Well done and thank you again!
Kind Regards
Errol.

Dear Wilf,
Thanks very much for the book “The Sandstone Steam Railway
– The First Ten Years”
I had an opportunity to have a good look and read of it today. An
excellent record of what you have collected and achieved and I feel
privileged to have been visiting for many of those years and to
have watched the growth. I still remember the e-mail you sent me
when you first started … doesn’t seem like 10 years
ago.
Going through the photographs brought back many good memories of
my visits.
All involved in putting the book together should be congratulated.
Well done and I hope we get to meet up again sometime this year.
All the best

I have just received my complimentary copy of your beautiful book
"The Sandstone Steam Railroad The First Ten Years".
Thank you SO much!! I had asked Hester to tell me when it would
be available at the shop, so it was a wonderful surprise getting
a complimentary copy. I am honoured to be included in it.
We look forward to seeing you on the 18th. I'm not sure that Vernon
and myself are qualified to do anything with antique vehicles but
we are very happy to help where we can!
Warm regards,

Hi Wilf , Joanna , Dave
I was very pleased to receive a copy of THE book yesterday.
Having authored and designed books myself , I fully realise what a
lot of work goes into it.I must say , I was very surprised by the
result.
I had been expecting a laminated illustrated stock list and little
more.
That , by itself , would have been worth having.
I was very surprised to see a hardback , strongly stitched , good
repro and what content.
It really is a complete book. By that I mean it's full of great anecdotes
and the design is really novel.
Ie cutaway pics of posters , the farm , numberplates , people etc
etc.
Had a hardline rail enthusiast been solely responsible for the design
/ content , it wouldn't have been half as good.
On a personal note , I was really chuffed to see one of my pics selected
for the cover.
Thank You very much !
Best Wishes
Dennis

The
Sandstone Steam Railroad
- The First 10 Years -
Dave Richardson & Joanna Molyneux-Killik
ISBN 0-620-37441-1
The Sandstone Heritage Trust, 2006, £12.50
This book tells the story of how and why the Sandstone Estate railway
line was built - the WHR's South African twin. It chronicles how
Wilfred Mole, the estate’s owner and a steam enthusiast, decided
to save the rolling stock of the failed Midmar Project in Kwa Zulu
Natal from the scrap man.
The Midmar locomotives and carriages were transported to Sandstone’s
estate in the Eastern Free State. This was initially for safe storage
but, before long, a project was hatched whereby the estate would
actually be served by a narrow-gauge railway. This would show how
a cheaply-constructed railway could actually work for the model
farm by transporting goods and harvests across a vast acreage. Before
long, a transhipment siding to the ‘Cape-gauge’ mainline
was in place and a depot built close to the main farm complex.
Once the line was up and running, historic 2-foot gauge locomotives
and rolling stock from all over the sub-continent appeared in all
kinds of condition and were quickly dealt with by Sandstone’s
expert restoration team in Bloemfontein. The line now has one of
the most diverse collections of narrow-gauge equipment and rolling
stock in Africa and the aim is to preserve the past as a living,
working entity under the umbrella of the Sandstone Heritage Trust.
To quote from SHT's excellent website: ‘Over the years the
Sandstone Steam Railroad has simply pursued a policy of trying to
accumulate on one site as diverse a cross-section as possible of
2ft narrow gauge items. There appeared to be no single preservation
centre that was focused on this activity and as a result it seemed
appropriate that Sandstone should take up the mantle and take full
responsibility for flying the flag for South Africa... Many other
countries around the world are blessed with a wonderful cross-section
of small industrial locomotives, particularly in the Sugar Cane
application, but very few countries can pride themselves on being
the place that created the need for locomotives like (the) NGG13,
NG15 and NGG16...’
Sandstone is not however, just 2-foot gauge… The estate also
looks after an amazing quantity of 500mm, 750mm, 2’6”
and 3’6” (Cape-gauge) equipment too. Indeed, Wilfred
Mole’s wife, Lindie, has a mainline-certified GMAM Garratt
named in her honour!
Your reviewer has been following Sandstone’s fortunes on the
internet for several years now and, until he received the book,
knew only a fraction of what they have achieved. The book, in A5
format, is neat and attractive. Most of the pictures are in colour
and reproduce well. Unfortunately, the print is in a small font
and might be difficult for someone with poor eyesight to read. It
is obvious why this has been done – to pack as much information
as possible into a small and relatively inexpensive book. However,
for those with normal eyesight it is readable without too much difficulty.
The only real criticism is that the map of the line is from a satellite
image and rather small and murky. A much clearer map would have
been better so that pictures could be related to locations. Other
than that, if you’re interested in overseas two-foot gauge
railways - those that followed where the FR led - this book is to
be recommended.
